Government officials in South Korea are planning to limit online gambling. The proposed regulations that are to be brought before lawmakers in September, are supposed to place strict limits on the amount of cash transactions that can be made over the Internet.
The online gambling is thought to have become a great problem in Asia. According to the figures complied by the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion, 9.2% of the population are in some way addicted to the internet, however, other surveys claim around 5%.
Currently, online gambling expenditure of $290 per month is allowed, but due to the poor verification procedures some gamblers manage to open multiple accounts with borrowed or stolen identity card numbers.
If the new regulation is passed, large cash transactions for online gambling will be followed with fines of up to $20,000, and they can even lead to two-year imprisonment.
